here aren't many advisers who
can say they have read the entire
Employee
Retirement
Income
Security Act (ERISA). Joshua Itzoe,
partner and managing director of
Greenspring Advisors, in Towson,
Maryland, however, has done just
that. When, in the mid-2000s, he
was starting to refocus his advisory
practice on retirement plans, he and
his partner knew they needed a way
to differentiate their services. " We
couldn't rely on our experience in the
space-we had none-or our age-
we were around 30, " he says. So they
decided to differentiate themselves
from a technical standpoint and
stress being fiduciaries. Hence, the
ERISA research.
Frustrated by what he saw as a lack
of good answers from those across the
industry concerning fiduciary responsibility
and 401(k) plans, he says, " I
printed out the entire ERISA regulation
and read it over a weekend. And what I
realized was that very few people had
any idea what the rules and regulations
actually said. "
From that point on, he notes, there
were two basic ideas that formed the
basis of Greenspring's philosophy:
1) Every great plan has to start with an
effective committee, and 2) It has to be
about more than just the investments.
