Coaching Youth, From Teams to Scouts
Mentoring kids has long been a part of John and his
wife and business partner, Kelly, Barrys' lives. After
coaching an economically and culturally diverse
football team, the registered principal with JMB Wealth
Management in Torrance, California, started a youth
lacrosse league, still in existence. Now, the Barrys
mentor Eagle Scout candidates, including the first
rising class of female candidates. The work involves
helping the girls identify and pursue their communityminded
passion projects, the Barrys say, with the ultimate
goal of helping them become more confident,
compassionate and capable.

had to only attend one meeting
of the Tuskegee Airmen, Atlanta
Chapter, to " be blown away and
want to join up, " he says. The
organization-in the spirit of the
first African American military
aviators, who fought in World War
II-offers seminars and mentoring
" to inspire [youth] to improve
their academic performance,
character development and citizenship "
and maybe pursue an
aviation career. " The impact [the
Airmen] has on kids in the Atlanta
community is incredible, " he says.
Adviser Gives the Gift
of Financial Education
Even well-educated Americans
" don't understand how to analyze
their everyday finances, " says Rita
Fiumara, senior vice president
of investments at UBS Financial
Services Inc. in Chicago. And that
impedes their saving for retirement.
So, when Barron's magazine
invited her to join its new
educational program and donate
subscriptions to a school of her
choice, she accepted. " I think this
can make a small but important
difference, " she says of her gifts to
an entire class at her alma mater.
" It's a different way to give back:
equipping people with financial
literacy early in their lives and
careers " when it can help most.
Winning Partnership
Empowers With Sports
The 52-year relationship between
financial firm Gallagher and the
Special Olympics is a natural. Both
are committed to excellence,
empathy and respect, says Mary
Davis, CEO of the charity, which
empowers athletes with intellectual
disabilities through sports
events, coaching and mentoring.
Last year, the two entities began a
four-year global partnership, notes
Chris Mead, Gallagher's chief
marketing officer, in Chicago.
Offices give financial support,
and employees volunteer. " It's
our culture ... to be participatory, "
he says. " We're seeing our
employees embrace this activism
