Advisers Offer Time, Money, Ingenuity

we present the profile of an adviser
or advisory practice involved in philanthropic
work. Besides to highlight the
good that plan advisers do and to attract a
new generation, we hope these stories will
inspire those who are still unsure what role
corporate responsibility or philanthropy
should play in their practice. Below are

When People Need
A Head Start
After learning about Head Start,
a federal program that aids
low-income children, George P.
Fraser, founder of Fraser Group
at Retirement Benefits Group in
Scottsdale, Arizona, wanted to
help. Today, he provides financial
education to parents of Head
Start students and has built a
scholarship fund for the teachers.
" I love what Head Start does, and
I've been looking for more ways
to give back, " he says. " I also love
being able to encourage others to
be engaged in this kind of work. "
Nationwide Network
Of Giving
CBIZ, an advisory company, invites
its employees to volunteer up to
20,000 hours, on work time. The
company's 100 offices choose
their own causes and collectively
run a National Food Drive and
support Dress for Success. These
" CBIZ Cares " efforts are overseen
by Molly Magnuson, a retirement
plan consultant with the firm in
Kansas City, Kansas. She says,
" CBIZ Cares gives people the
chance not only to give back to
their communities but to enhance
their own self-worth. "
Teaching Financial Literacy
Barbara Delaney, a principal at
StoneStreet Renaissance LLC,
volunteer teaches financial literacy
at Aquinas High School in the
Bronx, New York. A visit to the school
inspired her to create the one-hour
class for junior and senior girls, which
covers budgeting, credit card debt,
getting a job, choosing a college
major, etc. She also uses some of
the time to tell the girls about her
field. The class has been fulfilling
for all of them, she says, noting
that New York does not require high
schools to teach financial literacy.
A Culture of Compassion
Innovest Portfolio Solutions in
Denver, demonstrates its commitment
to the community through
monthly service projects that its
employees perform, decisions
made by its charitable donations
committee, and its participation
in a corporate work study program
with Arrupe Jesuit High School.
" Innovest was built on a mission of
stewardship, " says Peter Mustian,
the firm's chief operating officer.
" We see it as our responsibility to
care for our clients, co-workers and
the community around us. "
A Foundation That Spans
The World
" At SageView Advisory Group,
giving back is personal, " says
Randy Long, the firm's CEO. " That's
what gave us the inspiration to
establish the SageView Foundation,
with two goals in mind: To provide
health care and education in
Rwanda for women and children
in crisis and to promote microfinancing
initiatives that bring
sustainable change to local and
international economies. " Each year,
his practice donates a percentage
of its profits to the foundation. -PA
